In his rookie season with the Buffalo Sabres, he won both the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year and the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goalie, becoming only the third player ever to win both awards in the same year. After being traded to Pittsburgh in 1988, he became instrumental in the Penguins' dynasty, winning 369 career games and setting NHL records for most career assists and points by a goaltender with 48. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023.
